Mayo VEC administers the following Schemes on behalf of the Department of Education & Skills

  • Post-Leaving Certificate Maintenance Grant Scheme (PLC).
Students pursuing a full-time Department of Education & Science approved PLC course for the first time at an approved PLC second level centre are eligible to apply for the PLC Maintenance Grant.  The grant is means tested on parents/independent students income for a twelve month period i.e. 2009 Tax Year for the 20010/11 academic year.  The grant is paid monthly by the VEC of the county at which the course is being pursued.  

PLC Grant Scheme
Students who already hold a FETAC Level 5, Higher Certificate, Ordinary Degree or Honours Degree qualification are ineligible to apply for a PLC Grant.  However, if a student already holds a FETAC Level 5 qualification and are pursuing a FETAC Level 6 or higher course he/she are eligible to apply for a PLC grant.   • Third Level Maintenance Grant Scheme for Trainees (TLT)
Students pursuing a full-time Higher Certificate (formerly known as National Cert.) or Ordinary Degree (formerly known as National Diploma) course for the first time at any of the Institutes of Technology or DIT Colleges are eligible to apply for a TLT Maintenance Grant.  The grant is means tested on parents/independent students income for a twelve month period i.e. 2009 Tax Year for the 2010/11 academic year.  The grant is paid monthly by the College authorities.Students are ineligible if they already hold an Honours Degree (Level 8) qualification or have completed more than one year on an Honours Degree(Level 8) programme.  Students are also ineligible if they already hold a Higher Certificate qualification and wish to pursue another Higher Certificate course.
Students are also ineligible if they have pursued more than one year of a Higher Cert/Ordinary Degree course or already hold a Higher Cert/Ordinary Degree qualification and wish to pursue another Higher Cert/Ordinary Degree course.

  • VEC Scholarship Scheme
Students pursuing a full-time Honours Degree (Level 8) programme at any of the Institutes of Technology, DIT Colleges, University of Limerick or Dublin City University are eligible to apply for a VEC Scholarship.  Students who already hold a Higher Certificate or Ordinary Degree qualification and are transferring to one of the National Universities i.e. NUI Galway, U.C.D. etc or to a University outside of Ireland to pursue an add-on Honours Degree (Level 8) course are eligible to apply for a VEC Scholarship.  The Scholarship is means tested on parents/independent students income for a twelve month period i.e. 2009 Tax Year for the 2010/11 academic year.  The Scholarship is paid in three instalments (each college term). Students are ineligible if they already hold an Honours Degree (Level 8) qualification.

Students can apply for a VEC Scholarship if they are pursuing Full-Time Post-graduate studies in Ireland.  Post-graduate studies at Colleges outside of Ireland are not funded by the VEC Scholarship Scheme.

Special conditions applying to students over 23 years entering an approved course

‘Mature student’
A mature student means a student who is residing with parents/guardians and is at least 23 years of age on the 1st of January of the year of entry to an approved course.  This student is assessed for grant assistance on their parents and their own income.

‘Independent Mature Student’
An independent mature student means a student who is at least 23 years of age on the 1st of January of the year of entry to an approved course and who was not resident with his/her parents from 1st October of the year prior to entry on an approved course.  Such students can apply based on their own source of income for a 12 month period and they must submit documentary evidence of their independent address e.g. Utility bill, Lease agreement etc. 

(Mayo County Council administers grants for students who gain direct entry into universities.
