Adult Basic Education Scheme

What Does the Scheme Provide?
The adult basic education scheme provides opportunities to develop a range of skills in areas such as reading, writing, spelling, numeracy, form filling, letter writing, computer literacy and personal development.

The tuition is free of charge and may be offered on a one to one basis or in a group setting, depending on individual needs. All enquiries and arrangements in regard to the scheme are treated on a confidential basis.

The scheme also offers the following

  • Tuition in small groups covering reading, writing, spelling, numeracy, personal development, communications and computer literacy
  • Home learning with the aid of audio tapes and manuals
  • Opportunity to gain a national qualification awarded by Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC )
  • English as a second language (English for Speakers of other Languages -ESOL) for asylum seekers, refugees and migrant workers.
What support is provided?

Courses will help students to deal with tasks such as the following:

  • Reading books and newspapers
  • Helping children with homework
  • Writing cheques
  • Writing a note to the teacher
  • Improving handwriting
  • Reading and writing letters
  • Understanding and filling in forms
  • Reading instructions
  • Coping with reading and writing at work
  • Basic computer skills
 
Other Programmes Offered

FAS/VEC Return to Education Programme
The Return to Education programme is a special initiative between FAS and Mayo VEC to enable participants on community employment schemes to improve their basic education.
The CE participants are released from the scheme to attend classes during work time which are arranged to suit needs of participants

The course includes
  •  English,
  • Mathematics,
  • Communications,
  • Computer Skills,
  • Personal Development and
  • Job Seeking Skills.
Opportunities are also available for participants to gain FETAC qualifications.

Return to Learning
The Return to Learning programme is offered to employees of the Mayo Local Authority Councils and allows them to attend basic education courses during work time.
The course content includes the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Computer Skills and Personal Development. Courses are arranged at various venues around the county.

In-Company Learning
The VEC also responds to requests from business and industry and in cooperation with FAS organises education courses in the workplace. For details contact the adult education officer or any of the adult literacy organisers.
