POST LEAVING CERTIFICATE/FURTHER EDUCATION COURSES

The PLC or Further Education Programme (PLC/FE) is full time and provides appropriate vocational training to allow people to bridge the gap between school and work.
The Programme is designed to assist people to:
  • enhance their prospects of securing lasting, full-time employment
or
  • progress to other studies.
PLC courses run by Mayo VEC are open to
  • Young people who have completed senior cycle education, and require further vocational education and training to boost their prospects of employment or allow them advance to other studies,
and
  • Adults returning to education who may not have completed the senior cycle but are deemed by the provider to have the necessary competencies to undertake the Programme.
PLC Further education and training in County Mayo offers more opportunities than ever for learners, opening doors to new or better jobs or further higher education and training.
Our courses cover a very extensive range of options including

  • Business and Secretarial Skills,
  • Computer Studies,
  • Art Craft and Design,
  • Multi-Media Production,
  • Child-care and Community Care,
  • Tourism and Hotel and Catering,
  • Sport and Leisure,
  • Applied Languages and Information Technology,
  • Teleservices
Certification at Level 5 and Level 6 is available as set out by the National Qualifications Framework and is available through awarding bodies such as the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC - www.fetac.ie ).

Mayo VEC works closely with FETAC to ensure that all our courses are run to the highest possible quality standards. Quality Assurance (Q.A.) is a system of best practice that ensures consistent quality education ensuring the best teaching and learning atmosphere for students and for tutors. Read more here.

Maintenance grants are available for students who are registered on PLC courses. These are set by the Minister for Education and Science each year. The maintenance grant does not cover the charge for registration or examinations.
In 2008/9 if you are under 23 years of age and live within 24 Km. (15 miles) of the college you are attending, your grant is 1,370 euro. If you live 24 km. (15 miles) or more from the college, the grant rises to 3,420 euro. You may also be eligible for the top-up grant for disadvantaged students (For 2008/09 an additional 1,310 euro for adjacent students and 3,270 euro for non-adjacent students).
If you are over 23 years of age (mature candidate), your grant will be 3,420 euro, regardless of how far you live from the college. For details on how to apply and application forms click here

Castlebar College of Further Education (CCFE)
Castlebar College of Further Education (CCFE) located in the heart of Castlebar, offers a wide
range of PLC courses which are all FETAC approved. These courses are of 1 year duration and
range in discipline from Journalism, Graphic Design, Music, Marketing, Business Studies, Nursing
Studies, Childcare and Radio Production. CCFE is an adult learning environment where students
are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.

McHale College, Achill
McHale College, Achill in conjunction with Achill Outdoor International Education and Activity Centre are offering the following PLC course:

  • Outdoor Adventure and Recreation

This is a one year Post Leaving Certificate Course (FETAC Level 5).  The course aims to provide expert tuition in a range of ourdoor activities, leading participants to gain knowledge and skills which can later be used in the outdoor education industry.

Course Content
Eight modules are provided on this course:
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Outdoor Leadership and Safety
  • Hill walking Proficiency
  • Kayaking
  • Windsurfing
  • Communicatins
  • Business Studies
  • Work Experience
Additional modules may include Health and Safety/Rescue and Emergency Care

Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate/Leaving Cert Applied level of education or equivalent
Applications from mature students are also welcome.  Interviews are held in late Aug/early September.

Course Fees
A €50 administratin fee is payable with all applications.  This will be refunded in the case of a place not being offered after interview.

Grants

A means tested maintenance grant is available to PLC students.
